Sample buyer — A person whose level of purchase is less than a normal buyer. The term is derived from the reduced payment made in order to "sample" a product.

Sample mailing piece — An example presented to a list owner of the mailing piece the mailer intends to send to that list, often shown at the copy stage.

SCF (sectional center facility) — A large, regional postal facility designated by the first three digits of the ZIP code.

Secondary Address — An apartment number, mail drop, or other piece of information apart from the street address without which a piece of mail will not be easily delivered.

Seed name — A dummy name used to monitor mailings to an owner's list.

Segmentation — The process of dividing a list into mini-markets on the basis of demographic, psychographic or geographic data.

Selection — The process of choosing the specific segment of a list that would be the best target of a mailing.

Selection charge — An additional fee for a popular or proven valuable select, above the per-thousand base list fee.

Selection criteria — The segments available for a specific list.

Set up fee — A charge incurred during list processing that is passed on to the list user.

Sex select — See Gender select.

Shipping time — An estimated number of days that an item ordered will take in transit to the customer.

SIC — Standard Industrial Classification: a standard means of identifying every type of office, business, factory or institution.

Space ads — Print ads in magazines or newspapers.

Specific list source — The original source for a compiled list, usually a directory.

SRDS — Standard Rate & Data Service: publishers of a directory of mailing lists, including ads from mailers.

Standard industrial classification — See SIC.

State select — One of the available regional means of selecting names from a mailing list. State selects can be made by listing the desired state(s) on the purchase order. Other regional selects, such as ZIP selects, may require sending the desired ZIP codes on tape.

Subscriber — A person who has made payment for reading material to be delivered to him or her.

Suppress files — Files used in merge-purge solely for suppression of all names on the list.

Suppression — Using a list, such as the DMA's mail preference service list, to delete certain names from a file before generating labels.

Sweepstakes lists — Lists of those who have responded to a sweepstakes offer.
